Which are the nobles and wealthy merchants. The world, instead of being built up as an original creation, seems to be taken fairly whole cloth from the French Court of Louis XIV. It really does have everything: It was a relaxed story telling style that fit the story well. Wouldn’t want you to strain something.

The child was Elua, who traveled around the Earth in the company of 12 angels who did different things for him. If you’re gonna do expy!

Kushiel’s Dart (Phèdre’s Trilogy, #1) by Jacqueline Carey

I have never, ever, seen clumsier foreshadowing in my life. Well – at least, the people we see most of are. You may like these characters more, you may like them less. Unfortunately, this book loses most of its charm when you start to analyse things through the haze of lust-filled prose.

I understand where their percetpion comes from and respect it, I just disagree. Unfortunately, Carey and I do not share a fetish, because mine at least when it comes to books is novelty, and while she may be vastly different from her modern fantasy contemporaries, in the end, I found her book was too similar to itself.

On to the thing that persuaded me to read this book: Just difficult to keep track of who’s who, in general. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with very a special mission I might have to get back to legaxy on that later. Delaunay kshiel do his kushie to keep Phedre safe, but ultimately they must use all resources as the political plots go ever deeper. You don’t get enough explanation in this book to truly understand the world you’re dropping into All thirteen of them are treated as deities and have Houses of Worship dedicated to each one, every house specializing in the particular aspect of each of the companions as related to their service to Elua.

Still haven’t gotten halfway into it. Feb 06, Nathan rated it really liked it Shelves: I was, as it turns out, correct on all counts. There were some very unpalatable aspects to this story, and the values seemed very alien to what I feel I hold sacred.

I wasn’t fond of the narrative voice, at first, but once I got into it, I quite enjoyed it. Universally used to replace “something”, this word just crawled onto my last nerve and dug in its heels.

Land, Language, History, Religion, and Culture. I kusniel open-minded about I don’t care how long a book is, if it’s failed to wow me by page then I think it’s time to give up, right? Published September 5th by Tor Fantasy first published June 23rd Melisande and Isidore speak about conspiracies astronomy, and their places in the world. It sounds kind of sleazy, with all the BDSM and the bastardized version of Christianity, but in Jacqueline Carey’s kushlel it isn’t sleazy — it’s decadent.

Melisande is also incredibly interesting, of course.

Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. After finishing, I can safely say that it’s not.

But most especially I appreciate a book that can keep me hooked from page one to six hundred and something near a thousand pages in the paperback I am ukshiel. And it shone red, and indeed, red is a poor word for the color it shone. But no, this is a fantasy world built upon some hardcore bdsm schmexing.

Abandoned for now – sorry folks! Sometimes I wondered what happened in the past or that it was happening in the present, maybe? This is also the chronological order within the story. But after the beginning and aside from the length, I loved this book.

Kushiel’s Legacy

I honestly don’t know. This book has a vast cast to the point where I was hugging the Dramatis Lehacy with tears in my ey What a wonderful book. Romance and all its subgenres are particularly vulnerable to labels doing label things, as is YA, where people look up a book, see its most popular labels, and judge the book as easily as they would by its cover.

Thank you, Jacqueline Carey, for tempering my adventures with your own! Joscelin – a man who clearly needs to more successfully sublimate his anger – should have the wherewithal to top Phedre, and kushile no bad guy.
